Day 4 to 11

February 27th, 2008

Ok, so the sleeping isn’t working unfortunately. I still think I can do it physically and mentally, it’s just that it’s not practical at all. Last Thursday I was out at the pub with friends and that obviously fucked up my system and when I got home I slept for ages. I’m still looking into cutting down as much hours as possible of sleep though but I think I’ll go for a more biphasic system instead. Which is far more normal, and much more common. Basically involves sleeping 4 hours or so at night and then one 20-30 minute nap during the day.

Poker has been ok. Haven’t played much (little above 1k hands/day) so the plan for the next few weeks (and next  3 days in particular) is to play a lot more (around 2.5-3k/day) and to gradually start studying more (poker that is). Right now my edge is a little low and I’m way too dependant on rakeback. Looks like February will be my 2nd month in a row making more from rakeback than actually winnings. :(

Day 3 - I suck

February 20th, 2008

For the first 60 hours or so I just took the naps in the sofa, because I know that I sleep so comfortable in my bed that I often don’t even hear the alarms (and I’ve tried with 3-4 differenet simultaneous alarms). Stupid as I am, I figured I’d try taking the nap in the bed yesterday since sleeping in a 2-seat sofa was beginning to hurt my back. So I took a nap and woke up 8 hours later. :(

So I had a unintentional “reboot” as polyphasic sleepers call it. Which sucks, because it will take longer for the body to get used to getting into REM-sleep quickly when it doesn’t “need” to anymore. So I’ve basically restarted and hopefully I’ll be able to last longer now. I’m thinking this was strike one, and if I fail two more times I’ll just try to figure out another sleeping system (biphasic perhaps, which is like 4.5 hours at night and one 20m nap in the day).

I also managed to play 0 hands of poker, heh. I did some sportsbetting though. Scalping/Hedging is quite fun and I think it’ll also be very profitable when I can make bigger bets (in other words, when my bankroll is bigger). 12 out of 13 bets were winners yesterday.

Challenge has run for: 3 days, 6 hours…

Day 2

February 19th, 2008

Kind of busy right now, so I’ll write more tomorrow instead.

I will say that I bought a small 15” TV for my computer desk to be able to watch sports (crucial when you do in-play scalping in sports betting), and I can watch movies/soccer games when I play my poker sessions. Also, it looks cool.

I didn’t play much poker at all because I’ve been busy with other things (intentionelly) while in this zombie state of mind.

Challenge has run for: 2 days, 8 hours…

Day 1

February 18th, 2008

So far so good. Completing 1 day is not much to brag about though, so I’ll just go right ahead to some of the things I plan on doing.

Things to make it easier to succeed:

  • I’ll be eating as healthy as possible, and as many real cooked meals as possible. This shouldn’t be a problem at all since I love cooking. I will also have a lot of extra time on my hands so getting food ready quick isn’t much of a concern. I’ll take vitamins/supplements too and will eat a lot of fruit. I’m guessing that making sure I get enough nutrition will help a lot.
  • I’ll keep the schedule to the minute as much as I can, meaning as soon as I wake up, I set an alarm for 4 hours. When it rings I take the nap and set the alarm for 30 minutes. Repeat. This means I’ll be sleeping 30 minutes every 300 minutes (actually a bit less since I won’t fall asleep right away). So I’ll be awake 90% of the time. Nice.
  • These first days I’ll make sure to do simple tasks, especially during the hours around 2am-8am. Like cleaning, organizing, washing, simple computer tasks. I’m going to be really sleep deprived for a while so playing a lot of poker during these hours the first few days probably isn’t a great choice.
  • I’ll try to not stay at home too much. I think it’s important to go out as much as possible to lessen the risk of going insane, heh. Luckily I have a dog so that won’t be a problem. Also if I’m going to read a book I’ll probably go to a café or something similar.

I’m going to finish off this post now. I got a nap coming up in 2 minutes, heh, and I’ll save other information for later posts (such as what I’m going to do with all the extra time).

Challenge has run for: 0 days, 18 hours…

Poker hands (today / total): 2622

Poker profit (today / total): $331.6

Sports betting profit (today / total): -$12.3

Total profit (today / total) : $319.3

Überman sleep challenge

February 17th, 2008

I haven’t updated this blog in years basically and decided this might be a good time for a return. I changed the title and deleted older posts since they aren’t very relevant to this.

Anyway, I’ve decided to try a Überman sleep schedule for 1 month, starting today. Überman sleep is also known as polyphasic sleep and also as Da Vinci sleep. To read more about it click the links.

The short version is that it involves sleeping 6 times per day, but only sleeping 20 minutes at a time. This means you will be awake for 22 hours every single day. You never sleep a whole night or anything longer than 20-30 minutes.

The upside is obvious, you’ll get a lot more time on your hands to do whatever you want/need to. The downsides are several though. Sleeping can be nice and not being “allowed” to sleep longer than 20-30 minutes can drive you nuts. And from what I’ve understand from reading about people who have gone through this it’s absolutely crucial to not take a “day off” and sleep because the whole reason this thing actually works is because your body adapts to the sleep schedule and by sleeping longer your body will “reset” and you’ll have to start over again. The reason starting over isn’t good is because it usually take 1 or 2 weeks for the body to adapt to this sleep schedule. During these days you probably won’t feel very good, but once the body adjusts I’ve heard you’ll do just fine.

Another downside is that you get out-of-synch with the rest of the world. For the same reasons as above it’s also important to not stay awake for more than 5-6 hours at a time, since that will also interrupt your schedule. This means you have to plan your naps carefully if your going to friends, going to a party or whatever that may require you to be somewhere for several hours.

I’ve tried this before but gave up after about 6 days. I hope to succeed this time, but I think it’s pretty likely I won’t. So, don’t put your hopes up too high.

I think that’s enough for the first post. I’ll update soon about what I plan to be doing with my time and with links to others who have done this successfully.
